Day 1 Context: This lesson would be taught before beginning the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. This lesson is appropriate for students in a high school junior English class. The students in this class come from a suburban environment, and are of mixed gender, race, and include persons with disabilities.
Objective: This is a teacher guided discovery lesson aimed at setting the mood for the piece, introducing the students to the time period.
Pass Objectives: This lesson meets Reading and Literature Standard 2, objective 1, C; Standard 2, objective 2; Writing/Grammar/Mechanics and Usage Standard 1, objective 3, 4; Modes and Forms of Writing Standard 1, objective 1, A-C; Standard 1, objective 3, A-C; Standard 4, objective A; Oral Language/Listening and Speaking Standard 1, objective 1, 3; Visual Literacy Standard 1, objective 1; and Standard 1, objective 1 for 11th Grade language arts. http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/Subject/langarts.pdf
Procedure Introduction: I will give the students the schedule for The Crucible unit and the Journal rubric. Then I will go over the big due dates with them, exam, reading days, essay due date, etc. Guided Practice: I will ask them to take out a piece of paper and a pencil and prepare to take notes over a documentary about the Salem Witch trials. Independent practice: I let the documentary run for about 25 minutes, then stop it for the day and ask them to retrieve a laptop from the rolling portable laptop hut. I hand out the 1692 Salem Massachusetts Blog assignment and rubric .They may pair up if there is a shortage of laptops. I will give them each a piece of paper with a scenario of a person from 1692, explaining their occupation, gender, situation, etc. Example Situation: You are an 18 year old girl who lives with your family who are local farmers. You are a devote Christian and attend the local church once a week. You and your mother suffer from what modern day calls epilepsy, characterized by spontaneous bodily convulsions and foaming at the mouth. I will explain that the student must write 2 blogs as if they were the person in the scenario that I gave them. What are they doing? What are their concerns? How do they feel? What happens to the person? Use the notes from the video to recreate the tone of 1692 Puritan life. If they need further ideas, write this website on the board, http://endtimepilgrim.org/puritans.htm, and tell them that they could go there or research 1600s Puritan life on the internet. Remind them of our plagiarism policy. Each blog must be at least 150 words. The blogs must be posted to the class blog page under the student’s screen names (all established on the first/second day of class.) Conclusion: This lesson will bleed over into the next day, when there will be a conclusion. Remind them to bring their movie notes with them tomorrow so we can finish the video and to hang onto their Puritan scenario prompts. They do not need to turn anything in today.
